Abstract

Information about the annual growth variation caused by climatic or other environmental factors is important when comparing growth estimates obtained from forest inventories carried out in different years. Environmental-derived differences in tree growth during different time periods are usually assessed on the basis of growth indices. These indices express the annual growth variation of the tree after the effects of the most important, time-dependent factors affecting growth, such as the basal area of a stand, and tree age or size, have been taken into account.
