On the Correlation between Polarization and Brightness in the RV Tauri Star AR Puppis

Simultaneous photometry and polarimetry in the V band obtained over one and a half continuous pulsational cycle during 1997 December-1998 April clearly show that linear polarization and brightness are strictly correlated in the RV Tauri star AR Pup. Polarization, like brightness, undergoes two maxima and two minima during a photometric cycle (defined as the interval between two consecutive deep minima). The most likely mechanism which produces the exceptionally large linear polarization observed in AR Pup is selective absorption by non-spherical aligned dust grains.
