Abstract
We consider the problem of the NLTE inversion of Stokes profiles by means of a non-linear least-squares minimization procedure combined with very efficient multilevel transfer methods for the self consistent solution of the kinetic and radiative transfer equations. Our approach is based on the concept of response functions, which measure the first order response of the emergent profiles to changes in the atmospheric conditions. An approximate method for the fast calculations of these NLTE response functions allowed us to develop a NLTE inversion code that has been extensively tested for various groups of chromospheric lines (e.g. Ca II H, K and infrared triplet; Mg I b 1 and b 2). The code has proven to be reliable, thus becoming a valuable diagnostic tool for the solar chromosphere.
