Abstract
Coconut is effectively an outbreeding heterozygous plant and this has profound consequences on the characteristics of its seed. Seedlings may therefore be expected to exhibit great variability in selected characters that cannot be evaluated until the seedlings are reaching maturity after 5 to 8 years growth. Obviously the advantages to be gained by eliminating this variability are immense and the cloning of selected high performance palms has become a prime objective in coconut research.
