Abstract
Seeds cannot be used for coconut germplasm conservation owing to their large size and their highly recalcitrant storage behaviour that precludes storage under conventional dry and low-temperature conditions. Therefore, genetic resources of coconut are maintained mainly in field genebanks. There are many field collections of coconuts in various countries, usually connected with coconut research institutes. The FAO database on germplasm holdings contains a total of 950 accessions (Ramanatha Rao et al, 1998).
