Abstract

During the past decade, the study of the properties of head (X0) movement has yielded theoretically significant explanations of the generalizations that underlie a range of superficially diverse syntactic phenomena, e.g., the, word order differences between English and French (Pollock 1989), noun incorporation in Bantu (Baker 1988), and finite verb movement in Germanic languages (Haider & Prinzhorn 1986, Lightfoot & Hornstein 1994).
