Abstract

In the last several years it has been recognized that the galactic tidal force plays a dominant role in the dynamical evolution of comets in the Oort cloud. In particular, galactic perturbations are considered as one of the most important effects producing observable comets from the Oort cloud and from the interstellar medium. In this work we examine numerically the effect of the galactic potential on the long—term evolution of comets, concentrating on detailed analysis of individual comets from the observable population and their statistical characteristic. We compare also the influence of different galactic force components on the motion of a comet, raising a question what are the qualitative and statistical results of using a simple model of the galactic disk potential instead of a more realistic but more complicated model of a Galaxy as a whole.
