The model is designed to serve as a general explanation of environmental conflicts. Seven different types of transformation conflicts were distinguished, according to the actors involved, the societal fault lines, and the attributes of the conflict arena. Given the fact that type II, center-periphery, and type VII, global/long-distance, are variations of the same conflict formation, six conflict types remain driven by different actors in order to check the model. The term “checking” is used to distinguish it from quantitative “testing”.
