Contribution of the Response Surface Methodology to the Study of Low Velocity Impact on Sandwich Structures

Mechanics of Sandwich Structures

Abstract

The behaviour of sandwich structures under low velocity impact loading is a multiparameter subject. The main question is: how can we treat this problem to determine which parameters are critical ? The materials which can be used as skin or core of sandwich are numerous. The impact load can be defined in terms of mass and velocity of the striker, size of the sandwich plate, boundary conditions, geometry of the impactor [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6]. The effects of the plate dimensions are rarely studied. Researchers do not always define everytime the impact by the couple (mass, velocity) but often retain as the critical parameter the kinetic energy of the striker [7].
