Abstract

Creep properties of the unreinforced M124 (AlSil2CulMg1Nil) sbase alloy and the M124+s Saffil fibre reinforced metal matrix composite (MMC) were investigated by indentation tests performed between 250°C and 350°C. It has been found that while the creep curve of the base alloy consists of two stages (primary and secondary), the curve of the composite material contains a decelerating third part as well. This creep behaviour is correlated with the changes of the microstructure under the indenter during the deformation process. In the region of the steady state creep the stress exponent and the activation energy were determined for both materials.
