Abstract
A simple in situ process was employed to prepare TiCP-reinforced aluminium matrix composite samples. An Al-Ti master alloy was first superheated to achieve complete dissolution of the A13Ti intermetallic phase. The Al-Ti liquid solution thus obtained was then treated with graphite to establish a chemical reaction between the dissolved Ti and graphite. Finally, the melt was squeeze cast to retain the uniform distribution of TiC particles formed in situ. The phase structure of the melt and the reaction sequence were identified by the metallographic analysis of a series of melt samples which were quenched at the start and in the course of the experiment.
