Abstract

The radial growth of forest trees is an important indicator for stand development because it provides integrated information about environmental conditions over the entire lifetime of the stand. If it is used as an indicator for forest productivity, however, several uncertainties have to be considered. Firstly, the diameter increase is only proportional to the stem wood production if the tree mortality and the heightdiameter-relation of the trees are constant. These conditions depend heavily on stand age and management, but also on the occurrence of environmental impacts. Secondly, there is a considerable variability in tree growth even within a homogenous plantation that affects the size of the sample needed to produce reliable results. Furthermore, it has to be considered that the measurements do not quite reflect the actual average growth, because it is only possible to investigate the trees that have survived, while many of the slow growing individuals have already died.
