Abstract

Scepticism, both as a challenge of today and a historical problem, has become one of the basic topics of these last decades of our century. But “Sceptic” and “Scepticism” mean many things to many people. The only way of preserving the topic’s philosophical potential is to redefine it constantly. As soon as one attempts to reach a passable characterization, the fact that there have been and are many different varieties of Scepticism becomes obvious. Among the distinctions that have appealed the most to specialists is the one between ancient and modern Scepticism. Not only have specific studies been devoted to it,1,2 but those which are probably the best studies of ancient Scepticism3–6 incorporate the distinction in a significant and crucial way.
