Abstract

Cataclysmic variables show stochastic variations on time scales of minutes with amplitudes ranging from a few hundredths of a magnitude in some systems up to more than an entire magnitude in others. This phenomenon is known as flickering. Phenomenologically, it appears as a continuous series of overlapping flares in the light curves. For a comprehensive review, see Bruch (1992). As an example, Fig. 1 shows a light curve of the novalike variable V422 Oph.
