Cultural and Political Limits to the Transformation of Family Roles

Abstract

The last decades in Europe have seen an increase in female employment even amongst married mothers with children below ten years of age. This increase may partly be explained by economic reasons, households with children needing more than one breadwinner to maintain an acceptable standard of living. The increase may equally be explained by the emancipation of women and their need for economic independence. This trend is reinforced in Europe where employers on the job-market, especially those within the service sector, particularly appreciate mothers as employees. Indeed, this group of women need flexible working hours, often want part-time work and are prepared to accept jobs with less social protection.
