Abstract
The theory of uniform approximation by holomorphic functions of a single complex variable has a long history, starting with the classical results of Weierstrass (1885) and Runge (1885), including the result of Walsh (1926), Hartogs and Rosenthal (1931), (M.A.) Lavrent’ev (1934) and Keldysh (1945) and attaining its culmination in the works of Mergelyan (1951) and Vitushkin (1966) (cf. the surveys [194, 303, 195] et al).
