Abstract

The formation of atmospheres and exospheres of the Galilean satellites is the result of a variety of physico-chemical processes including volcanic outgassing (only for Io), ion sputtering, thermal sublimation, and meteoroid bombardment. The ionization of the neutral gas cloud embedded in the Jovian system in turn provides the source material of the magnetospheric plasma. New observations from the Galileo mission have shown that the interaction and coupling of the satellite atmospheres/surface with the Jovian magnetosphere could be far more dynamic and significant than previously thought.
