A Study of Landslides Based on GIS Technology

  • Chapter
Book cover Geographical Information Systems in Hydrology

Part of the book series: Water Science and Technology Library ((WSTL,volume 26))

Abstract

Published techniques and examples of landslide hazard mapping are reviewed with emphasis on possible applications using GIS. This is followed by a description of a study in Basilicata, Italy. A GIS methodolgy based on 3-D hydrogeotechnical models is discussed, together with the difficulties of defining hazard assessment from rainfall triggering mechanisms. The digital datsets within the GIS, their sources and details of data conversion are then summarised. Suggestions are made for additional work, and finally some examples of GIS map output are provided which were used to explore the relationships between land-use change and landslide distribution.
