Abstract

New developments in supramolecular chemistry open up the exciting prospect of being able to engineer new varieties of liquid crystals in which the basic mesogenic unit is a supramolecular aggregate, and which, in turn, incorporates a prescribed functional property. Indeed, examples of liquid crystals based on directed hydrogen bonded self-assembly are now beginning to appear [1].
