Abstract
This tsunami produced a runup of 31.7m, the highest in Japan in this country. It caused a severe damage to Okushiri Island and Hokkaido. The details of the tsunami and damage were surveyed by many researchers and will be published elsewhere (for example, Satake and Imamura). The present paper aims to summarize some of these results in order to show the major characteristics of the tsunami and damage to the readers who have no access to references written in Japanese.
A brief description of the tsunami runup distribution illustrates some of the typical characteristics of the tsunami. Major casualties are quoted from reports of local and central authorities. Disasters are described for the Aonae 5th Section which suffered the severest damage due to the tsunami and fires after the tsunami. The transmission of warnings was interrupted by several unexpected accidents and a warning was not transmitted in time. A defect was found in the communication system which had been especially provided to solve the problem of isolation.
