Abstract

The early to mid-1980s saw the dawning of the true age of the micro-computer revolution. This started with micros becoming affordable to the home user and the subsequent explosion of the computer games market. The IBM PC became the de-facto micro for business users, with clones of the IBM PC being mass produced. These clones had full compatibility with the IBM PC, i.e. an Intel 8088/8086 processor, PC/MS-DOS operation system, etc. The outcome of this was that computer ownership in the home, business and higher education establishments become common-place, and public awareness and knowledge of computers increased dramatically.
