Abstract
Although reviewers did not immediately hail it as a classic, Principia Ethica proved to be a ground-breaking work. With its argumentative rigor, with its self-conscious clarity of purpose, and with its close attention to distinctions that other philosophers were seen as having overlooked, Principia’s intellectual style contributed significantly to the emergence in English-speaking countries of so-called analytic philosophy. Because it joined Moore’s other writings and those of philosophers like Russell and Wittgenstein in fostering and then consolidating this intellectual trend, the impact of Principia on twentieth-century philosophy is beyond question.
