Part of the International Archives of the History of Ideas / Archives Internationales d’Histoire des Idées book series (ARCH, volume 143)

Eduard Gans was born in 179713 into a prosperous Berlin Jewish family. He grew up in years marked by prolonged political and military turmoil, the rise and fall of empires, and the permanent shifting of national state power alignments within the German-speaking world. An infant when the French imperial expansion began, he was a child when the Holy Roman Empire of the German nation collapsed and a teenager when the “War of Liberation” culminated in the French retreat from Eastern Europe and the fall of Napoleon.
