Abstract

Semi-brittle, polycrystalline ceramic materials (e.g. MgO) have a nonlinear and complex overall response to applied load due to development of limited plasticity and internal microdefects. Experimental results (e.g. Davidge [1] and Papadopoulos et al. [2]) show that defects develop mainly intergranularly for pure or low porosity materials. This process, on the mesoscale level reveals changes within the internal structure of the polycrystal and is strictly connected with the type of material loading. During monotonic loading a local inhomogeneity and anisotropy are induced in the solid. One can describe them macroscopically by averaging procedures over the unit cell and introduction of internal damage parameters.
