Abstract

Industrial applications of the Thin Layer Activation technique require a specific experimental setup with respect to irradiation (yields, radioactivity depth profiles, autoradiographical film procedures for irradiation uniformity certifying, etc.), a proper measuring method and the dedicated electro-mechanical apparatus selection, having in view the tribological phenomena to be studied. In this paper general criteria together with a few examples of TLA applications carried out using our laboratory’s U-120 Cyclotron are presented. Wear-determination experiments performed for some Diesel engine components, such as a Ø105 mm linear cylinder and an injection pump’s piston, as well as a study of the characteristics of various Romanian mineral oil lubricants, are presented aiming at an illustration of economical industrial TLA applications.

Supported in part by the International Atomic Energy Agency (Department of Research and Isotopes), Vienna, Austria.
