Competition and Financial Centres in Europe: London as a Case Study

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Financial and Monetary Policy Studies ((FMPS,volume 28))

Abstract

This paper is divided into three sections. The first reviews the theoretical framework for analysing the ways in which international financial centres compete, and goes on to consider some of the ways in which governments, regulators and financial intermediaries have responded to that competition. The second looks at the position of the City of London today, and reviews recent developments in the main business sectors. Finally, the third section considers some of the challenges and opportunities with which the City of London1 is faced.

This paper has been prepared by the authors in their personal capacities, and does not necessarily reflect the views of the Bank of England.
