The Competitive Position of Germany as a Financial Centre as Seen by a Central Banker

  • Chapter
The Competitiveness of Financial Institutions and Centres in Europe

Part of the book series: Financial and Monetary Policy Studies ((FMPS,volume 28))

Abstract

The 1990s, with their rapidly changing underlying conditions — as exemplified by such catchwords as innovation, securitisation, globalisation and computerisation — will witness a further intensification of competition in the financial markets. Above all, the deregulation of the national financial markets and the almost total liberalisation of capital transactions have given a new dimension to the rivalry among market players: we are actually witnessing a two-fold process of competition between market participants, on the one hand, and between the geographic centres for financial services, on the other.
