Abstract
Techniques are described for the preparation of large surface area samples of amorphous and crystalline ice for measurement of the FT-IR spectra of a) the bare ice surface-defect modes, b) the surface-defect modes shifted by adsorbed small molecules, and c) the fundamental modes of the adsorbate molecules. Examples are presented for each type of spectrum as well as interpretations derived from simulation results for large amorphous ice clusters. Particular details are given of the dynamics of molecular hydrogen adsorbed on microporous amorphous ice at 12 K.
