Abstract

In this paper I sketch several phenomena that illustrate graphotactic constraints, i.e., restrictions on the ways in which the elements of a writing system may combine with each other. I will consider here three different kinds of units: letters, punctuation marks, and graphemic constituents of letters. First, whole letters.
