Abstract

This paper has two goals. First, we present a brief introduction to Determinacy Analysis (DA), a new method for the quantitative analysis of data in the social sciences, including sociology, psychology, and linguistics. Second, we apply this analysis to the study of spelling and reading in German and English. In particular, we offer a solution to the thorny problems of spelling German /s/, reading German <s, ss,ϟ>, and the contrastive analysis of spelling and reading the English and German long and short vowels. The symmetry of the accuracy and completeness of a determinacy is accentuated, and the difference between determinacies and rules is stressed. All in all, a determinacy analysis is found to be a contrastive analysis that is both quantitative and qualitative.
