No subject has been described more extensively in the scientific literature of tropical grasslands than that of tropical legumes. This chapter will not seek to emulate the many accounts of their potential role. However, as Crowder & Chheda (1982) remarked: “in view of the benefits gained by growing legumes in combination with grasses it is surprising that they have not been more widely used”.
