Abstract

Over and above the determination of stresses and displacements in shell structures, under some loadings the question of elastic stability of a shell arises, just as it does in plates and columns. As Bushnell said in his unique paper in 1981 [11.1], “to the layman buckling is a mysterious, perhaps even awe-inspiring phenomenon that transforms objects originally imbued with symmetric beauty into junk”. For shell buckling two textbooks form the bible of the early literature: one by Timoshenko [11.2], the other by Bleich [11.3], along with six NACA Reports by Gerard and Becker, one of which deals with shells [11.4].
