Environmental Initiatives in Russia: East-West Comparisons

  • Chapter
Environment and Democratic Transition

Part of the book series: Technology, Risk, and Society ((RISKGOSO,volume 7))

Abstract

This paper focuses on a wide variety of public participation processes, both in terms of subject (improvement of the living environment, the fight against pollution, protection of historical and cultural monuments) and goals (protection, renewal, reconstruction, innovation, and social experiments). We are interested in comparing the dynamics of goals and forms of public participation in Russia to those in Western European countries. We are especially interested in the process of public participation which began to develop rapidly in Russian cities in the second half of the 1980s.
