Abstract
This paper is an attempt at summing up the results of research into the ecological consciousness in the USSR. The gathering of data, reflecting the attitude of the entire Soviet population towards ecological problems, became possible only in the late 1980s, when the All-Union Center for Study of Public Opinion was set up. The authors developed three ecological blocks for the Center and used them in the 1989 – 1990 opinion polls (April, 1989 representative sample of the urban population of the USSR, 1019 respondents; November 1989, representative sample of the USSR adult population, 1516 respondents; August 1990, representative sample of the entire USSR population, 2949 respondents). Data used in this paper are drawn from these national surveys.
