Abstract

Once upon a time a leading Frisian Labour politician sealed his political fate with public remarks which ran about as follows. Because of the situation in the province, its economic development had his first and foremost priority. This development had to be fostered by a concentrated and large-scale approach and effort. He neither wished nor hoped that this would damage Frisian language and culture. By taking counter-measures such damage must be prevented. But when, notwithstanding such measures, Frisian language and culture would yet suffer damage, he had to accept that. These words put an end to his political career. Why? Because he took a clear stand in a painful Frisian dilemma. We shall try to trace this dilemma briefly.
