Abstract

Undoubtedly the most pervasive figure to contribute to the understanding of the psychological effects of unemployment has been Marie Jahoda. Her work has spanned a period of more than 50 years, encompassing both the Great Depression of the thirties and the era of high unemployment in the late seventies. Publications arising out of her research during both periods remain seminal pieces of work which continue to both inspire and influence psychological research.1
