Electronic Structure and Dielectric Properties of Semiconductors

Book cover Optical Properties of Semiconductors

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSE,volume 228))

Abstract

The general theory of the dielectric properties of semiconductors is revisited, and general properties, like dispersion relations and sum rules, are emphasized. The dielectric properties of semiconductors are then related to the band structure and to the excitation spectrum. Excitons are shown to couple to the radiation field to give polaritons. Quantum confinement of the electronic states in one direction is shown to have important effects on the dielectric properties, particularly on those related to excitons and polariton states. Quantum Well optical properties are discussed.
