Abstract
The land of Egypt occupies the northeastern part of the African continent. It is roughly quadrangular, extending about 1073 km from north to south and about 1229 km from east to west. Thus, the total area of Egypt is a little more than one million square kilometres (1 019 600 km2) occupying nearly 3% of the total area of Africa (Ball, 1939; Said, 1962; Abu Al-Izz, 1971). Egypt is bordered on the north by the Mediterranean Sea, on the south by the Republic of Sudan, on the west by the Republic of Libya and on the east by the Gulf of Aqaba and the Red Sea (Figure 1.1).
