Abstract
Extensive areas of fen vegetation remain in a semi-natural condition in The Netherlands in former turbaries where peat was dredged for fuel until early this century. These areas consist of former bodies of open water, known as ‘petgaten,’ with floating rafts of terrestrializing fen vegetation. They represent refugia for many plant and animal species which have disappeared from most other natural areas in The Netherlands. This account focuses on the fen system, rather than just the fen vegetation, and includes sections on succession and eco-hydrological factors governing terrestrialization. Special attention is paid to the difference between ‘petgaten’ and larger virgin mires. We have followed the vegetation classification presented in Chapter 6 (Den Held et al. 1991), and have used as examples data from the same areas treated there.
