Abstract
A major problem nature conservation all over the world has to deal with is the adverse effect of human activity, direct or indirect. In the Netherlands there is no part of the country that has not been touched by man so that even the so-called natural areas are the result of anthropogenic interference. Up to the 20th century human activities in the Netherlands have added considerably to the diversity in flora and fauna. High flora and fauna diversities had developed, especially in mire landscapes under the traditional, extensive agricultural regime of cutting peat, mowing and burning. Methods used in agriculture hardly changed over the centuries and the action radius of man was restricted permitting gradients in activity to develop. The result of this great variety of small scale anthropogenic influences was a high diversity in habitats, superposed on existing gradients in environmental factors.
‘O maakt nich alle Grund terecht To Akkerland, to moat en waide. Loat hier en doar een Höokien frijj, Een streepien veen, een stückien haide Dat hier en doar een stechien bliff Soa as et uns de Heergott giff.’
folk poem (Eastern-Netherlands).

‘Please don’t change every piece of land To fields for raising crops and meat Leave clear some scattered tiny plots, A stripe of mire, a nook of heath That here and there remains a lot As gave to us the Mighty God.’
