Abstract

The development of nitrogen-fixing nodules takes place in a series of stages, controlled by genes in the bacterium as well as in the plant. Molecular genetic and cell biological studies revealed three major, somewhat independent series of events : i.) nodule initiation and in many cases root hair curling ; ii.) infection and iii.) nodule development culminating in nitrogen-fixing symbiosis. In this overview the genetics of early Rhizobium-plant interactions leading to nodule initiation is discussed. Genes controlling these events have been identified almost exclusively from the bacterial partner, (except the work of Bisseling at al which is presented in this volume). Therefore, this short review deals primarily with bacterial genes controlling nodulation (nod genes). Due to the fairly high number of nod genes the new nod genes are designated as nol genes.
