Thermal striping : structures in interacting jets

Abstract

Turbulent jets at markedly different temperatures impinge on a steel structure above the cores of sodium-cooled fast nuclear reactors. Temperature fluctuations in the sodium induce fluctuations in the steel, and the thermal fatigue so produced can lead to premature failure.

A detailed description of this thermal striping phenomenon is beyond the reach of methods such as kє. This paper reports a first attempt to predict it by Large Eddy Simulation, using a simplified geometry. It is found that LES can predict the probability distributions of the temperature field, and that it could therefore supplement the scarce and difficult experiments on this effect.
