Abstract
We investigate the entire internal gravity wave field generated by towing a sphere in a linearly stratified fluid. We are able to discriminate the lee waves, generated by the virtual object composed of the sphere and the turbulent wake, from the gravity waves emited by the turbulent wake. A sharp transition is observed between the field dominated by the first type of waves and the field dominated by the second process. This transition occurs at a well defined Froude number F c = 4 and is associated with the appearance of coherent structures in the wake of the sphere. These structures, when they collapse, generate waves. To avoid boundary interactions some experiments were done in the large stratified towing tank facility of the french meteorology.
