Abstract

Shipbuilding has in the past several decades been one of the most important sectors of Swedish industry, at least until 1976. By then that industry was an important generator of export earnings in Sweden and an important sector of the economy for employment of skilled workers. In the mid-1970s the Swedish shipbuilding industry proudly boasted of its status as the number two producer in the world in terms of output. Sweden was second only to Japan.
