Abstract
The Rio Plomo glaciers have been studied since 1909 (Helbling, 1919). The fluctuations of these glaciers show a general retreat from 1909 to 1974 (EspizĂșa, 1986) but there are two surging glaciers in the region, one of them was the source of an ice-dammed lake in 1984, similar to the one in 1934. A great amount of information was originated after the 1934 flood, caused by the outburst of the ice-dam produced by the surge of the Grande del Nevado Glacier. The maps drawn by Helbling in 1914, together with a new map made in 1985 by photogrammetric restitution of the 1974 aerial photos, were used to estimate the mass loss throughout that period. This was carried out using two different methods.
Between 1974 and 1986 some of the Plomo glaciers readvanced and, in 1984, the Grande del Nevado Glacier advanced three kilometres and dammed the Plomo river its surge.
