Historic Glacier Variations in Scandinavia

  • Conference paper

Part of the book series: Glaciology and Quaternary Geology ((GQGE,volume 6))

Abstract

It is generally believed that most glaciers in Scandinavia melted away during the climatic optimum 7000–3000 B.P. A majority of the glaciers reached their maximum extension during the climatic deterioration in the 18th century, but some of the maritime glaciers in western Norway reached their maximum or near maximum as late as in the first part of the 20th century. Glacier advances in the early part of this century are associated with periods of below normal summer temperatures. A number of glaciers did respond simultaneously to these events. After the extensive glacier melt during the following decades, it seems that various glaciers reacted differently. Some dit not respond to the increase in net balance in the 1960s until a long build-up period had passed. The paper gives a summary of present knowledge on historic glacier variations in Scandinavia.
