Abstract

In May 1981, 25 years of “Gaullist” politics ended following a presidential election that gave to the socialist candidate, François Mitterrand, a slight but decisive majority. The parliament was then dissolved, and a new chamber was elected which gave to the Socialist party an absolute majority, and the possibility of an unprecedented total power to foster a real change in French politics.
