Abstract
One of the most interesting fruits of isotopic analysis of Roman sarcophagi has been the suggestion of a sharp decline in the use of Carrara marble for sarcophagi decorated at Rome in the third century AD (1). I deliberately use the term “suggestion”, because the sample of sarcophagi was small (some fifty items). However, the sample may gain in value from its random nature; the sarcopiia.gi happen to be in museum collections in London, Pisa and Rome through accidents of recent history, and the evidence for the apparent decline of Carrara is an unexpected by-product of an attempt to characterise the material of the sarcophagi as subjects of a museum catalogue.
