Abstract

The criteria allowing one to decide whether a reaction is really photocatalytic are first presented. Then the importance of determining quantum and chemical yields is emphasized. In a second part, the oxidation and, to a lesser extent, the rearrangement of various organic compounds in oxygenated suspensions of powder semiconductors in neat-liquids or solutions are reviewed, as well as some methods and results concerning the investigation of the active oxygen species involved. The final part deals with metal on titanium dioxide bifunctional photocatalysts and with examples of endergonic or exergonic reactions involving organic reactants and hydrogen which can be carried out over these solids. In connection with other papers in this school, this presentation critically outlines the results and the possibilities of heterogeneous photocatalytic reactions.
