Abstract
Apart from water, other agents have the potential to play an important role as an alternative source for hydrogen production from sunlight. Among the different compounds, such as alcohols (1) and organic wastes in general (2), hydrogen sulfide represents an attractive source of energy since it occurs widely in the natural gas fields and is produced in large quantities as an undesirable by-product in coal- and petrol-related industries (3). In addition the oxidation of sulfide to sulfur or polysulfide is expected, on thermodynamic considerations, to be an easier process with respect to the oxidation of water to O2.
